At the Esplanade Markets in St Kilda I discovered a hat stall. Prue hand crafts all of her hats, each one retro, each one with its own story like a page in a history book.
She eagerly shares these stories with potential buyers.
My hat was a 1940s design. She explained that the hat was designed for the lady of leisure who was out for a walk in the afternoon sun, perhaps by herself, perhaps with her dogs. You may notice that the brim is raised at the front. This is done intentionally to create enough space for the lady of leisure to wear sunglasses without contact being made. We all know how uncomfortable it is when the hat knocks your sunnies, or worse rests on them and leaves you with a headache!!!
I couldn’t wait to share this with you! It’s one of my favourite purchases of the year!!
